Innsbruck is often nicknamed the 'Heart of the Alps' and is the epicentre of skiing in the Austrian Alps. The capital city of the Austrian state of Tyrol, Innsbruck has a reputation for being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. The 800-year-old city centre is home to many museums and beautiful Austrian architecture, including the gold-roofed castle of Fürstenburg which dates back to the 15th century. Besides visiting the cultural heritage, it is a great place for shopping and enjoying delicious local food in the many restaurants. The main street, Maria-Theresien-Straße, is the perfect place for window shopping while enjoying the views of the lofty Nordkette mountain, which watches over the city from the north. Innsbruck is a great base for combining a city trip with ski holidays in the Tyrol area. It's no wonder Innsbruck Airport is one of the most popular ski airports.
Innsbruck hosted the Winter Olympic Games twice (in 1964 and 1976), and is considered one of the greatest ski cities in the world. This is not surprising when you take into account its excellent position in the heart of some of the best skiing territory in Austria. From the city you can take the free ski bus to five different ski areas. The Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck ski area alone provides almost 300 kilometres of fantastic ski slopes. For reliable snow cover, you can head to high-altitude ski areas such as Kühtai or the Stubai Glacier. And cross-country skiers can enjoy the famous cross-country ski area Seefeld, which is within easy reach of Innsbruck and offers a 300km network of cross-country ski trails. Nobody gets bored in Innsbruck! Nightlife here is in keeping with that of a large, thriving and popular city - there is something for everyone and every budget, you just need to choose! Ski holidays in Innsbruck are packed with interesting, fun and exciting activities, on and off the snow. Don't forget to take a visit to the Top of Innsbruck viewing platform (2300m) to gain a full appreciation for the mountain scenery surrounding Innsbruck.
A mountain city surrounded by ski areas

In total, the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck ski areas offer more than 300km of slopes. From nursery slopes to snow parks, freeride routes to perfectly groomed cruisers, the varied ski areas of the Olympia SkiWorld Innsbruck offer pistes geared towards all different levels and skiing/snowboarding styles. City trip to Innsbruck
A ski holiday based in Innsbruck is unlike any other ski holiday in the Alps. Instead of the usual slopeside umbrella bars and ski-in, ski-out accommodation, staying in Innsbruck offers different advantages. This is a full-on city with a castle, an opera house, a historic city centre, museums, a zoo, and excellent shopping and nightlife. There are plenty of flights all winter long to Innsbruck and the public transport within the city centre is excellent. For a special occasion, take your loved one to the Seegrube Restaurant. High above the city at an altitude of 1905m above sea level, the Seegrube offers wonderful views and an experience you'll never forget.
Long history of winter sports
Innsbruck made a name for itself in the winter sports scene by hosting the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics, and the alpine city has retained its dedication to winter sports competitions. One such ongoing competition is the Four Hills ski jumping competition, which visits Innsbruck every year and sees the best of the best ski jumpers compete for the gold on the 134m-high Bergisel jump with its views over the city. Off the slopes, we mortal souls can enjoy other, less intense winter activities such as tobogganing, cross-country skiing, bobsleighing on the World Cup track, swimming in the Olympic Village, ice skating, ice climbing, snowshoeing, winter hiking, fat bikin and cross-country skiing.
