Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is consistently recognised as one of the top family ski areas in Austria. Parents can ski on almost 220km of slopes, knowing the little ones are in good hands in the ski schools. There are multiple children’s areas, plus fun parks, carving tracks and race courses where teens can show off their skills.

Made up of nine smaller ski resorts, the legendary SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental boasts an impressive 284km of pistes. Many of these are wide, gently sloped pistes that are perfect for children and beginner skiers. If they’re not quite at that stage yet, you have your pick of childcare facilities in the valley or even right on the mountain. The nurseries accept children as young as five months old.
With 109km of slopes, Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau qualifies as one of the largest ski areas in the Austrian state of Tyrol. Skiers and snowboarders come here for the long pistes – up to 7km – which are perfect for practising turns. Budget-conscious families will be happy to know that children under 6 ski free, with special rates for older children and teens as well.

The Tiroler Zugspitz Arena offers winter sports fun for the whole family. While mum and dad treat themselves to a few laps of the slopes, babies and toddlers will be well looked-after at the Tirolerhaus day nursery on the Ehrwalder Alm. The nursery is open daily from 9am to 3pm and care is possible for as short as half an hour if you wish.

It's hard to beat the family-friendly offers at the Almenwelt Lofer: child-safe chairlifts, child-friendly tariffs and free skiing every Saturday for children and teens under 15 when accompanied by both parents! The ski slopes here are perfect for children, with an abundance of wide blue slopes that are not too intimidating.

Galtür im Paznaun has made an effort to avoid mass tourism, and visitors to this corner of the Paznaun Valley will find a pleasant, family-friendly ski resort waiting to be discovered. Check out the Dwarven World and the Adventure Land with the kids while the teens go shredding in the Actionpark. And don’t worry about queuing: kids get priority on the Birkhahnbahn, the Alpkogelbahn, the Ballunspitzbahn and the Klein Zeinislift!

Leogang is part of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, one of the largest linked ski areas in Austria with 270km of pistes – but that doesn’t mean it’s hectic here. Quite the opposite, in fact: Leogang has preserved its tranquil character and offers relaxed skiing away from the hustle and bustle of the Skicircus. Little skiers can learn in peace on the Schanteilift T-bar.

Another peaceful ski resort that’s shied away from the frantic pace of bigger ski areas, Kühtai offers off-the-beaten-track skiing on 80km of slopes with modern lifts and short queues. Skilled young skiers can tackle the Kühtai rally, which covers 15km and has 12 stations where they can participate in exciting tasks and riddles.

What’s your favourite family-friendly ski resort in Austria?
Born and raised in the ski paradise of Vancouver, Canada, I learned to ski before I can remember, balancing precariously on my parents’ skis as they sailed down the hill. I started snowboarding in my teens and am now delighted to be exploring everything Europe’s ski scene has to offer!
