These super-sized ski areas are generally born when several ski resorts decide to link their ski areas together by cable car or ski lift and the new ski area can accessed with a single ski pass. What characterizes these super-sized ski areas in the first place is, of course, their XXL size in terms of ski slopes, altitude differences and number of lifts but also in terms of level of services, facilities and accommodation options. They usually include several charming smaller ski resorts, often offering a different choice of après-ski and festive and sporting events giving you plenty of choice when booking your ski holiday.
Our top 5 super-sized ski areas
In the French Alps there are many large ski areas which are shared by a group of smaller ski resorts between the Alps and the Pyrenees. Although it is difficult to be really certain as no-one can truly measure the number of kilometers in a ski area, it appears that the two largest French ski areas are:
- Les Portes du Soleil with 650 km of slopes and 1200 m elevation difference which brings 12 French and Swiss ski resorts together and
- The 3 Valleys ski area with 600 km of slopes and 2600 m elevation difference incorporating 8 ski resorts including Val Thorens, the highest ski resort in Europe.
Not forgetting the other big players:
- In Austrian terms, the Olympic Skiworld Innsbruck ski area, with 9 ski resorts and 300 km of ski slopes is certainly worth a mention,
- A seriously super-sized ski area is the Italian Dolomiti SuperSki area which has no less than 1200 km of slopes! The only catch is that the different parts of the ski area are connected by shuttle bus and it cannot therefore claim to be the largest ski area in Europe! This ski area can be reached from the resort of Cortina d'Ampezzo, which became famous after the 1956 Olympics and then the James Bond film "For Your Eyes Only",
- The ski area of Zermatt may not be the largest but it can claim international fame as it is dominated by the most beautiful mountain in the Alps: the Matterhorn!
