If you're an advanced skier or snowboarder, definitely don't miss the chance to tackle the Black Mamba on the Kitzsteinhorn. Otherwise known as piste #14, this is one of the most renowned black slopes in the Alps, with a gradient of 63 percent. Not something to be taken lightly! You'll feel the burn in your thighs as you rocket down this kilometre-long run with a vertical drop of 290 metres. A great chance to see if you've really perfected your ski technique! Are you game?
The Glocknierwiese on the Schmittenhöhe is the perfect slope for beginner skiers or anyone looking for a nice relaxing run. The slope is nice and wide, and the only drawback is the crowds it attracts during high season - which serve as an indication of how great it is! Unfortunately, this can affect the snow quality, so try to head here earlier in the day if it's a busy day on the slopes. You can reach the Glocknerwiese via the modern 8-person Glocknerbahn chairlift.
The Trass slope requires endurance, strength and technique. This extra-long run on the Schmittenhöhe has a 70% gradient and is best-suited to expert skiers and snowboarders. The slope starts gently enough on blue slope #1, but don't let this fool you. Soon you'll find yourself on black slope #14. Overall, the Trass measures over 4 kilometres long and has a vertical drop of 1000 metres.
In search of a nice red piste on the Schmittenhöhe? You've come to the right place. The Osthangpiste gives you full freedom to choose: short, quick turns or long carving turns, it's up to you! This makes it the ideal place to practise your technique, whether you're just mastering carving or whether you're looking to take it to the next level.
Black piste #9 might just be the best-kept secret in the Schmittenhöhe. Not only is it amazing and uncrowded, but it also lies in the shade all day, meaning it won't get slushy at the end of the afternoon. Go ahead and eat your lunch and then come back here - you should still have decent snow!
