As the coronavirus sweeps through the world and has us all huddling inside and social distancing, skiing might be the last thing on your mind. But there's no reason you can't brighten up your house arrest by bringing some of the Alps to your living room! Ski season 2019/20 is over, but we skiers and snowboarders know that skiing itself is never REALLY over! Here are 8 things you can do to make up for that cancelled ski trip (we know, we know, it's not the same).
#1. Take care of your ski and snowboard gear
If you were lucky enough to go on a ski holiday this year, you might have already stashed away your ski or snowboard gear in a huff when the ski areas all closed. Not so fast!! Give it some TLC now and it will be ready to hit the slopes next year with minimal effort. Sharpen the edges, give it a fresh coat of wax, dry and properly store your boots and NOW you're set for the summer! Tips for keeping your ski gear in mint condition >
#2. Watch skiing and snowboarding films on YouTube or Netflix
Even in October or November this is how we get our kicks without actually going to the slopes, so why not start a bit early? To get you started, here are the most-watched skiing videos on YouTube >
#3. Read a skiing book
We've got all the time in the world to read now, so dig out that skiing booklist because it's finally time to get started! Try Freedom Found by Warren Miller or Higher Love: Skiing the Seven Summits by Kit DesLauriers.
#4. Do a (ski) puzzle
Puzzles are coming back, and there's no better time to do one than when you're stuck inside and literally can't think of anything better to do! Here's one of Flaine, the closest thing to being there yourself! Keep in mind delivery times will be longer right now.
#5. Do some (online) ski and snowboard clothes shopping
Lucky you, you have all spring to decide what piece you want to splurge on for the upcoming ski season! Will it be a new jacket? Those new goggles you've been eyeing? You might even be able to get a great deal on 2019/20 gear! What are you waiting for?
#6. Keep fit
This seems to be the number one worry on everyone's mind right now - how to keep fit if we're stuck inside all day? The good news is there is plenty you can do from the comfort of your own home, using little to no equipment. Here are some tips for exercising your ski muscles >
#7. Cook your favourite winter sports dish
One of the things we always miss most about the Alps is the delicious cuisine, so why not bring it home? There are plenty of authentic dishes you can make right in your own kitchen. Check out Snowplaza's recipes page for inspiration!
#8. Start planning your next ski holiday
The tourism industry in the Alps has been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis, with many small hotels and ski resorts fearing that they won't be able to make it through the summer. Make their day by booking next winter's ski holiday already! And maybe this year try visiting a lesser-known ski resort or small accommodation provider, to give these guys a chance to stay afloat!
