We all love a ski holiday, but we don’t love having to lug our ski and snowboard equipment halfway across town. If you’re tired of checking ski bus timetables and cursing your too-small ski boots after hiking to the slopes, it’s time to look into ski-in, ski-out accommodation. Once you experience what it’s like to stay in a hotel right on the slopes you’ll never go back! An added bonus: instead of forking out for an expensive meal at a mountain restaurant, you can even invite the group back to your place for lunch.

When travelling with a group, it gives you the freedom to split up so that those who want first tracks can go out skiing while the night owls can sleep in a little longer. And the great thing is that ski-in, ski-out accommodation comes in all types: hotels, chalets, apartments and in many cases, something to suit most budgets. But some ski resorts have more slopeside accommodation than others, so when you’re planning your ski holiday, this is something to keep in mind.

Top 5 ski-in, ski-out destinations by country

Pretty much every country that has ski resorts will have a certain number of ski-in, ski-out accommodation options. The higher-altitude ski resorts in France are particularly known for this, as are many of the ski resorts in Austria. Switzerland has a number of ski resorts where the ski pistes run right through the village centre. You’ll find many cases of this in Italy as well, where many of the hotels and apartments have the slopes right on their doorstep. And while Germany may not be the first ski-in, ski-out destination that comes to mind, you also have plenty of options for slopeside accommodation in the German ski resorts.

Ski-in, ski-out hotels

Some people prefer a slopeside hotel over an apartment. Hotels have a certain magical charm – breakfast is ready for you in the morning, there’s a built-in restaurant, daily housekeeping and pretty much your every need is taken care of. With a ski-in, ski-out hotel things are even easier: just click out of your skis, change your ski boots for something more comfortable and you’re ready for a night on the town. Whether it’s relaxing by the fireside, pampering yourself in the spa or going for an après-ski drink or two, everything is easier when your hotel is located directly on the pistes.

We all like getting pampered once in a while. If you can permit yourself to splurge on a luxury ski-in, ski-out hotel, your ski holiday just got that much better. Luxury hotels have all the extra bells and whistles – infinity pools, gorgeous spas, stunning panoramic views, fine dining, spacious and elegantly appointed bedrooms... You might even be so comfortable in your free slippers and fluffy bathrobe that you’ll find it difficult to drag yourself out of your room to go skiing! Yet another option when booking your ski holidays is to stay in an apartment. You’ll have full control over mealtimes and won’t have to wait for breakfast to be served – you can grab it yourself and rush out the door to get first tracks in the morning. No more walking for miles in those painful ski boots!

Mountain huts aren’t just for grabbing a bite to eat and a drink – many of them also offer the option to stay overnight. It’s impossible to be closer to the slopes! Mountain huts tend to have more charm than your typical hotel or apartment and are often family-run, with a traditional touch.
