At 1450 meters of altitude, at the foot of the Splügen, lies the historic village of Splügen. The proximity to neighboring Italy made this town an important link in Roman times. The inns and hotels that were built here, still determine the character of the now historic village center. The southern part of Graubünden is particularly snowy as is the sunny ski area Splügen-Tambo. This is the ideal ski area for beginners with plenty of relaxing skiing. On the 40 kilometers of cross-country trails that run along the Hinterrhein, skiers can marvel at the beautiful nature of the Rheinwald. For hikers Splügen offers about 20 km of winter hiking trails which is a fraction of what is possible here in the summer, but still very worthwhile.
