Small-scale ski club with lots of enthusiasm
The Ski-Allenheads ski area is a volunteer-run ski club with skiing on several short runs when snow conditions permit. The club has its origins in the British Norwegian Ski Club, which was founded in the late 1800’s by the Bergen Steamship Company. The ski area at Allenheads has been a permanent fixture since the 1960’s thanks to the work of its dedicated volunteers.
Nestled in the North Pennines, Northumberland, the small village of Allenheads is just 150m from the Ski-Allenheads ski area. Allenheads is reputedly the highest village in England and was once the site of an important lead mine. Today, the village maintains a strong sense of community and close ties with the ski area. Since its post-heyday slump, the former mining community has been steadily picking up steam again in recent years and has converted many of the old historical buildings into modern-day businesses and a heritage centre. Accommodation in Allenheads itself is limited but visitors can choose from a selection of B&B's in nearby Allendale or the neighbouring countryside.
Alternate activities
The North Pennines have been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty as well as a UNESCO European and Global Geopark. A beautiful area with rolling heather moors and waterfalls, the region surrounding the village is perfect for hillwalking.
Restaurants and bars
The mountain at Ski-Allenheads has a rudimentary cabin with a terrace and a view of the slopes. Further facilities such as toilets, restaurants and accommodation can be found at the village of Allenheads. For a drink or a hearty meal, the ski club recommends the Hemmel Café as well as the historic Allenheads Inn, the latter of which doubles as a B&B.
Families
Sledging is prohibited at Ski-Allenheads and there is no ski or snowboard school. However, the ski area is perfect for learners and popular with children. Additionally, there is a children’s play area inside one of the old buildings at Allenheads village. The closest nurseries for children are at Hexham.
