One of the better-known resorts in America and very popular with film stars, Aspen gets its name from the aspen trees that dot the hillside and light up the mountains in bright yellow and orange in autumn. The ski area at Aspen is actually made up of four linked mountains: Buttermilk, Highlands, Snowmass and finally Aspen Mountain, also known as Ajax. The mountains are joined by a free shuttle bus.

The ski areas at Aspen offer a wide variety of terrain for all levels, from gentle beginners’ slopes to intermediate cruisers to double-black moguls, glades and gullies. In true North American style, the ski areas hide more than one powder stash and on bluebird days expert skiers and snowboarders will flock to their favourite spots. Find your own spots with a Powder Tour, which takes you around the back of the mountain by snowcat. Buttermilk has freestyle facilities and good terrain for beginners, while Snowmass is a huge area with lots of terrain for everyone. Aspen Mountain and Aspen Highlands are more geared towards advanced and expert skiers. Cross-country skiers can explore 90km of trails in the Roaring Folk Valley between Aspen and Snowmass. This is the largest groomed cross-country trail in America.
